Finding Peace and Pride in My London Garden Journey for Better Mental Health

Living in London can be an exhilarating but overwhelming experience, especially when facing mental health challenges. Amid busy streets and city noise, finding moments of calm can feel unattainable. However, I discovered the empowering and healing nature of gardening, which transformed not just my relationship with nature but also my mental well-being. With Pride Week upon us, it is essential to acknowledge the diverse experiences and identities within the LGBTQ+ community, including our collective journeys with mental health. In this post, I will share my path into landscape gardening, emphasising the mental health benefits of being outdoors, while reflecting on the vital role of pride in our lives and communities.


The Call of the Garden


As a lifelong city resident, I often felt a profound disconnection from nature. The towering concrete structures, bustling streets, and constant noise of London left little room for peace. Everything shifted during a challenging phase in my life when I felt especially lost and overwhelmed. I made the decision to visit a local botanical garden for a much-needed escape.


Wandering through the lush greenery, inhaling the scent of fresh earth, and immersing myself in a riot of colours reignited something in me. I felt lighter and more alive. This experience inspired me to start my own landscape gardening business, with the intention of spreading the joy and healing of gardening to others while working on my own recovery.


The Healing Power of Nature


Numerous studies highlight the beneficial connection between nature and mental health. For instance, research from Stanford University found that walking in natural environments can reduce anxiety by nearly 25%. Being in a garden can lower cortisol levels, the stress hormone, and enhance feelings of happiness.

When I tend to my plants, I concentrate on the textures of the soil, the colours of blooming flowers, and the growth of new leaves. This active engagement allows me to temporarily set aside my worries and reconnect with my sense of purpose.


For me, gardening is not merely a pastime—it has become a crucial part of my mental health journey. Each plant in my London garden symbolises resilience and diversity, much like the LGBTQ+ community I proudly belong to.
